Planning our trip to Montreal

We have a big first day. The original plan was to go from Saskatoon to Kenora, ON so each day we would drive about 1000KM, however, since the last day we need to be in Montreal in the afternoon so we can meet up with our landlord we need a shorter last day. Solution, drive a lot on the first day. Our first day goal is Thunder Bay, ON. If we feel we can’t make it that far on the first day we can just stay in some small town on highway 17.

A bit shorter day for the 2nd day. I broke it up in two chunks otherwise google maps shows that we should take the north highway which may appear shorter but apparently the highway isn’t as nice or as fast as the southern one.

Nice and short drive for the last day. We want to get to Montreal mid-afternoon so that we don’t have any troubles finding our new apartment and also have plenty of time to contact our landlord and get keys for it. Our apartment is on the 2nd floor and there is no elevator so it will probably take awhile to unload everything and it sure would be nice to do it while there is still light out. Day 4 – August 20 No driving! Our plan is to relax and explore Montreal for a bit. We will probably start finding furniture for the apartment (table, couch, chairs, bed, computer desk). Warren will be in Montreal as well so we will probably try to meet up some place for supper. We will probably have an early night as August 21 to August 31 we are going on our honeymoon out East. We haven’t finalized our plans for that yet but I’ll post once we have discussed it.

Hi Jeff,
I am Rachel’s friend that got you in contact with Hershey. As I recently made the move, I would suggest the northern route. We took it a month ago and it’s pretty good. I have taken the southern route many times. While the Great Lake is beautiful, I have always encountered bad weather there. As well, the terrain is very hilly which is hard on the driver and the gas.
I am curious to know where you plan to finish on your second day that will make your third day so short. I only say this as the second day on the southern route is generally the hardest. With two of you driving you can make it to Thunder Bay on the first.
I would say that if you arrive in Montreal between 3 and 6, you will hit traffic. No big deal, it will just be pretty slow going.
Good luck !

Hey Heather. Thanks for the info about the southern route. We will be making this drive 4 times so I figure we may as well try the south one at least once. CAA shows that the northern route takes considerably longer, do you think that is true?
Our 2nd day I was hoping on making it to Pembroke, ON (I guess I forgot to put that in the post). On day 3 I was planning on getting into Montreal before mid-afternoon to make sure we could get into our apartment early. If traffic gets bad by 3 I guess we will need to make sure we get in Montreal before then.
Thanks for the help.

Hi Jeff,
If I remember correctly, 940 is the English Montreal radio station that has traffic reports every ten minutes.
